Acupuncture Not Superior To Sham Acupuncture In Knee Osteoarthritis

OsteoarthritisResearchers from MD Anderson Cancer Center determined patients with osteoarthritis (OA) of the knee who are treated with traditional Chinese acupuncture (TCA) do not experience any more benefit than those receiving sham acupuncture (placebo). The team did find that the communication style of the acupuncturist could have a significant effect on pain reduction and satisfaction in patients. Full findings are now online and will publish in the September print issue of Arthritis Care & Research.

Unigene Reports Continuation Of Phase III Study Of Oral Calcitonin In Osteoarthritis Patients

Unigene LaboratoriesUnigene Laboratories, Inc. announced that Novartis and its license partner Nordic Bioscience have decided to continue the companies’ two-year, Phase III Study 2302 assessing safety of oral calcitonin in patients with osteoarthritis of the knee. Novartis has a worldwide license to produce recombinant calcitonin under Unigene’s patented SecraPep® E. coli manufacturing technology. An independent Data Monitoring Committee (DMC) reviewed and conducted a “futility” analysis of one-year data for all patients enrolled in Study 2302.

Popular Diabetes Drugs Associated With Fractures In Type 2 Diabetic Patients

DiabetesPostmenopausal women with diabetes taking thiazolidinediones (TZDS), including rosiglitazone and pioglitazone, may be at increased risk for fractures according to a new study accepted for publication in The Endocrine Society’s Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism (JCEM). Men with diabetes taking both loop diuretics and TZDs may also be at increased risk of fractures. From the study, researchers identified 786 cases of fractures and 2,657 matched controls.

UCLA Launches First West Coast Human Hand Transplantation Program

UCLA Health SystemThe UCLA Health System has launched the new UCLA Hand Transplantation Program, the first of its kind on the West Coast and only the fourth such center in the United States. The program will help those who have suffered the traumatic loss of a hand or forearm and allow them to regain function and improve their quality of life. Qualified candidates are now being sought for a clinical study of the procedure.
